My Big Risk
To be honest, this is one of the scariest things I have ever done. Definitely one of the biggest business risks I have ever taken. Emphasis on business, since the biggest risk of my life was getting married at 19 to a boy/man/boy who had less than $300 to his name. Let’s hope this leap of faith proves to be as rewarding as my teen bride situation, 11 years of blissful marriage going strong!
You may not even know that my business is the Denver Photo Collective. It is a photography studio that I rent out hourly to Denver photographers. I try to help them elevate their business and keep their clients coming again and again by creating cool styled sets for them to come shoot in. Dreaming up shoots and executing them is such a fun creative outlet for me. I truly love it!
When we moved to Denver 3 years ago, I was still a full time photographer, but the longer we were here the more I felt God pulling me down a different path. I was inspired to start the studio, at the time it was an insane idea, but I knew it was planted by God so I moved forward in faith.
My first studio required blood, sweat and tears to get going. Literally, we moved walls, grinded floors, painted ceilings, moved heaters, installed lighting. A total gut job/labor of love that we took on during the nights after Todd worked a full day as a dentist. We put our kids to sleep in pack-n-plays and worked until the wee hours of the morning. I’m so grateful that our worked paid off and the photographers came! More and more come every day and I’m so grateful.
I’ve been searching literally for a full year for the right space. It’s tricky to find something with the right light, right location, right ceiling height, right price, and right look. I didn’t want to settle. I’ve had four major heartbreaks this year of spaces falling through, but I’m SOO glad those were unanswered prayers! I was led quite miraculously to this new space, and I can’t wait to see what the future holds for us and for the hundreds of photographers who use the space every year.
Now have a little vision here:
It’s in the heart of Denver in the arts district, it’s got high timber ceilings, amazing North facing windows (a must), space to grow and I couldn’t be more excited to push myself as I try to figure out a way to pay for this thing It’s four times our current lease. So, it’s a risk! But, I’m willing to bet on the space, and you better believe I’m willing to bet on myself.
Baby number four is due in 60 days, so the timing couldn’t be better. HAHA! Ya right! This time around though we plan on wielding a check book instead of a sledgehammer to get the jobs done. Thank you so much for being here and support me and my family and the Denver Photo Collective!!
